Dies ist ein traditionelles japanisches Fest oder Zeremonie. Wörtlich übersetzt "Öffnung des Spiegels" (nach einer Zeit der Enthaltsamkeit) oder aber "Teilen des Mochi" (Reiskuchens). Traditionell fällt dieses Fest auf den 11. Januar (ungerade Zahlen sind in Japan mit viel Glück verbunden), jedoch wird in der Praxis dieses Fest außerhalb Japans um dieses Datum gefeiert. Es ist in der Regel das erste wichtige Ereignis des Jahres, nach dem Neujahrstag. Es bezieht sich auf das Anschneiden eines Kagami mochi oder die Anzapfung eines Fasses Sake bei einer Party oder Feier.
Im Kodokan stellt dieses Fest die Neujahrs-Eröffnungs-Zeremonie dar. Es werden festliche Ansprachen gehalten, alle Kata demonstriert und Kämpfe abgehalten.
